I was awestruck by this wonderful recording of a collection of pieces not previously familiar to me, aside from sections of the Widor 6th Symphony. Mr. Sherman and his colleagues have achieved a remarkable balance between full orchestra and the organ. Regarding the latter, its contribution to these works throughout the disc frequently includes a massive pedal part, which requires optimum bass reproduction to fully appreciate it, as 32 foot stops are prominently utilized. However, Mr. Conte never overwhelms the orchestra with his tasteful registrations. The ambience of the Grand Court is reproduced faithfully.
Compared with prior discs of this instrument, the impression on the present CD is one of a more recessed organ sound. I presume this was an aesthetic choice to allow a more complementary relationship to the orchestra.
In any case, kudos to all concerned for allowing us to share this very special event. Highly recommended!
