A Sunday in Paris

Experience how a Parisian would have heard the harmonium on a typical Sunday in the 19th century! At the church, Parisians heard the harmonium accompanying the choir during Mass in the morning, followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the afternoon. In the evening, perhaps they would be fortunate to experience the virtuosity of a great musician playing harmonium in a salon concert.
Although one can often arrange harmonium music for the pipe organ, the harmonium's unusual arrangement of stops with split keyboard, and the ability for the player to vary the amount of wind in the reed while the note is being held, provide the player with unique expressive capabioities unavailable to the organist. This program includes many works heard on recording for the first time with original instrumentation---works by Franck, Saint-Saens, Gounod, Berlioz, Lemmens, Dubois, and Lefebure-Wely.
