The Tudor Choir adds to its critically acclaimed collection of recordings with this new CD of music by Renaissance composer Jacob Clemens non Papa (c.1515-c.1555). Clemens composed in all of the expected genres of his time. Much of his music is infused with a personal quality that differs from the generally abstract nature of much Renaissance sacred music. The music on this disc is a survey of his Latin-texted sacred polyphony, including his intimate Requiem, plus a Magnificat setting and a sampling of motets. The pieces chosen for this recording reveal texts that portray such themes as relationships, family, and remembrance, and therefore demonstrate the unusual "personal" quality to be found in Clemens' works.

Richard Marlow's final recording as director of the Trinity Colleg echoir (Cambridge, England)! The choral works of Edward Elgar are gems of the English Romantic tradition. Under the direction of Marlow, the choir of Trinity College was the first mixed choir in a Cambridge college. As an adult mixed choir, they have the distinctive, clear English sound we admire, but with the power that only mature voices can produce. Highly recommended!

Completed just after the large organ at the Meyerson Symphony Center (home of the Dallas Symphony), the Fisk at SMU shares many of the same characteristics that have made Fisk the leading builder of concert hall organs. The organist is Michael Farris, whowas on the organ faculty of the Eastman School of Music when he died tragically in his early 40's. Farris won three national performance competitions including the MTNA Collegiate Artists Competition in 1976, the Ft. Wayne Competition in 1985, and the National Young Artist Competition of the American Guild of Organists in 1986 and was one of the brightest "organ" stars of his generation.

Historic Trinity Church on Copley Square in Boston is the setting for this program of choral music. A generous amount of music from the Anglican tradition included, but what makes this recording distinctive is the inclusion of music from other traditions, including the spiritual There is a Balm in Gilead, the F. Melius Christiansen arrangement of Beautiful Saviour, and the only recording of the Victorian classic, "The Holy City" that we are aware of.

The 1994 Lively-Fulcher organ includes significant amounts of pipework from the church's original 1895 Carl Barckhoff. Two 16-foot choruses on the manuals, plus a solo division with Bombarde's and cornet, and a full pedal with two 32-foot stops provide the gravitas required by Liszt's organ works. Head of the organ faculty at Peabody, Donald Sutherland is a Liszt expert, and renders this repertoire with drama and excitement. The addition of Lizst's "Cujus animan" (a transcription Rossini's Stabat mater for trombone and organ is a delicious bonus.Generous acousticsput it all together in this superb recording.

and to read the booklet. If you walk into Grace Cathedral and look up, you will see something quite unusual. The arches of the Gothic vaulting are present, but there is no ceiling between the arches. Barely visible is the underside of the roof, painted black. The illusion is of a Gothic structure without obstruction between it and the heavens. The choir of men and boys creates a similar effect in sound with this program of music from our own times—close your eyes and experience The Worlds Above from Grace Cathedral!

When Bach died in 1750, he left behind an incomplete manuscript that was perhaps being prepared for future publication. The intent of the collection, or the organizational scheme are difficult to discern, but Bach may have been planning something on the same scale as Clavierübung III (the "German Organ Mass"). Whatever the intent, these enlargements and revisions of earlier chorale preludes contain some of Bach's most sublime musical moments.

Frederick Swann demonstrates the tonal variety of two organs completed by Reuter in 1997. Recorded in 1967, this historic recital is the premiere recording of the Basilica's two large organs, built by the Möller. The recording is full of important moments: the transcription of a Handel organ concerto played as a duet on the two instruments, Maurice Duruflé's transcription of Tournemire'simprovisation on Victimae Pascali, played by Mme. Duruflé. The concert concludes with Maurice Duruflé's Prelude and Fugue on the name of Alain (again, played by Mme. Duruflé). Those looking to find an example of authentic French organ playing need look no further.

Franck and Widor established French Romantic organ work. Franck's Grande pièce symphonique was the first to use the term "symphony"; Widor's fifth symphony is perhaps the most famous work of the genre, and concludes with his ever-popular Toccata. The works of both composers are well-suited to the grand, Gothic space of the National Cathedral.

Not all great organ music is big and bombastic—as these sonatas prove! Requiring flawless technique on the part of the player, these three-movement chamber works are delightful pieces on the surface; deeper analysis reveals marvelously constructed compositions that could only spring from the mind of J.S. Bach. Lippincott plays the perfectly-suited Taylor and Boody organ at St Thomas Church, NY. Extensive notes by Bach scholar, George Stauffer.

Frederick Swann plays the world's largest church organ! The first organ was built by E. M. Skinner for the chancel of the church. In 1969 a new and larger instrument was built in the rear gallery by the Schlicker Organ Company, who also constructed an Italian-style continuo organ located above the south choir. All the organs can be played from either or both of the two consoles, one in the chancel, the other in the rear gallery, creating a single instrument of great size, containing divisions of contrasting styles.

British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams is known for his choral anthems and large-scale works, but he was also responsible for selecting the tunes fo the 1906 version of The English Hymnal. He wrote some tunes himself, such as Down Ampney (Come done, O love Divine) and Sine Nomine (For All the Saints), and arranged some 40 English folksongs. The result was a substantial and lasting contribution to 20th-century hymnody, which is celebrated in this recording.

SING WE NOEL: Christmas with the Washington Men's Camerata
|
This recording documents an extraordinary concert, intended to capture the spirit of shape note conventions, which are still held today in many parts of the country. Invited choirs joined the Master Chorale to perform Wesley, Idumea and Sweet Prospect, surrounding the audience at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Alice Parker was Special Guest Conductor, joining Music Director Donald McCullough. Shape-note singing is a distinctively American tradition that is enjoying a revival. Born from the desire to invigorate congregational singing, the shape-note tradition created its own musical notation, a robust singing style and a substantial collection of hymnody.

In his first recording on the new Rosales organ of St James, Cathedral Organist Joseph Adam explores the soundscape of Parisian organists from the mid 19th century to the present. The Rosales organ is cast in French Symphonic style and is greatly enhanced by St James' reverberant acoustics.

Of the many musical forms that J.S. Bach cultivated during his lifetime, none has enjoyed more lasting influence than the prelude and fugue. In this recording, Joan Lippincott provides us with a beautifully rounded survey of Bach's mature preludes and fugues, from the Pièce d'Orgue, BWV 572, one of his boldest independent preludes, to the Prelude and Fugue in E Minor ("Wedge"), BWV 548, one of his most ambitious compostions for the organ. To round out the recording, Lippincott also includes the Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel hoch, a very late work, written at the same time Musical Offering
