Program Notes

The liturgical year consists of a series of readings from the Bible, one set for each day, which commemorate important events and people in Christian history. Music written for specific days and their associated themes constitute the essential repertoire of any church musician. But sometimes current events can create a new context for the liturgical lectionary, making old readings seem surprisingly relevant and musical experiences unexpectedly deeper.

This was the case at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, when the first day of school happened to occur on September 11, 2001. The university organist, Susan Ferré, had just been appointed for a one-year interim following the senseless killing of her popular predecessor. This was a community that was already in shock and mourning.

Equipped with one of the finest organs in the world, Lagerquist Hall provided the means for a wide range of musical expression. Presented here are some of the organ works which were played in services there, from the first day of classes on September 11, through the year for more than 130 services, to the triumphant sending forth of Pentecost Sunday and Commencement Worship on May 26th, 2002.
